초록이 가득한 요즘，봄 기운이 완연하다. 절정에 이른 봄을 즐기기 위해 주말이면 연인，친구，가족들과 함께 나들이를 나서는 사람들이 부쩍 늘어난 것 같다. 좋은 사람들과의 특별한 시간을 오랫동안 간직하기 위해 나들이에서 카메라는 필수품이다. 특히 젊은이들 중에는 성능 좋은 카메라를 구비해 전문가 못지않은 솜씨를 뽐내는 사람들이 많고 사진과 관련한 동호회나 온라인 블로그 등의 활동도 유행이라고 들었다.

익숙하진 않지만 필자도 사진에 관심이 많다. 그래서 비록 아마추어의 시선이지만 멋진 사진을 남겨보고자 얼마 전에 새 카메라를 한 대 장만하기도 했다. 자연의 풍요로움과 신비감을 담은 풍경사진，사람 냄새 물씬 나는 인물사진，역사의 현장 등을 담은 기록사진 등 사진 속에는 다양한 빛깔의 향기가 담겨 있다.

필자의 회사에서는 2007년부터 매년 특별한 사진전을 열고 있다. '다 함께 행복한 세상'이라는 이름 아래 질병의 고통을 겪는 사람들의 삶과 희망，그 주변 사람들의 노력과 헌신을 담아 휴머니즘을 재조명하고 다 함께 힘을 모아 질병의 고통을 극복해 나가자는 취지로 마련했다. 이 사진전에는 산악인 엄홍길과 함께 히말라야 등반 희생자 시신 수습을 위한 '초모랑마 휴먼원정대'에 참여하는 등 다큐멘터리 사진으로 유명한 김우영 사진작가가 함께 했다. '암을 딛고 일어선 사람들，반신불수가 된 남편의 병수발을 드는 아내，희귀병을 가진 아들 곁에서 희망을 잃지 않고 살아가는 어머니' 등 다양한 사연을 지닌 환자와 가족들，그리고 질병으로 고통받는 환자들과 함께하는 의사 등 총 100인의 생생하고 감동적인 모습을 사진에 담아냈다. 이 작품들은 환자의 휴머니즘을 처음으로 조명한 사진전으로 인사아트센터와 병원 등 여러 기관에서 전시하면서 큰 관심을 모았다.

이와 함께 의사들이 직접 참여해 의료 현장의 생생한 모습을 담은 사진 공모전도 2007년부터 매년 개최하면서 의료 현장의 애환과 열정도 확인할 수 있었다. '첫 아이의 탄생 순간，피 튀기는 수술실，새우잠 자던 인턴시절' 등 실제 의료 현장의 모습과 함께 '남극세종기지에서 근무했던 공보의 시절의 추억，귀여운 아이의 표정' 등을 포착한 사진을 통해 평범한 일상 속에서 느낄 수 있는 의료의 참모습과 따뜻한 속내가 전해졌다.

사진 속에는 사진을 찍는 사람의 감정이 그대로 담겨진다고 한다. 얼마만큼 피사체와 교감하는가에 따라 사진의 느낌이 달라진다는 것이다. 카메라 렌즈를 통해 피사체를 바라볼 때 애정을 담는 것과 마찬가지로 우리 눈을 통해 세상을 바라볼 때 좀 더 긍정적인 프레임으로 바라보면 어떨까. 어려운 시기에 다같이 행복한 세상을 만드는 첫 걸음이 될 것이다.

Humanism captured through lens

As the green covers everywhere， we evidently feel spring. Many people are going out to suburbs on these weekends with their families， lovers and friends to enjoy the glory of spring. The camera is essential in outings in order to keep and nurture special moments with loved ones for a long period of time. Many young people are especially boasting professional－like skills of taking photos using high－performance cameras and increasing numbers are actively participating in photo－related online communities and blogs.

As there is a saying that 'seeing is believing'， the image of a good picture often provokes an enormous impact. Though I am not that skillful， I have a keen interest in photographing. In fact I just bought a brand new high tech camera with a stunning performance， at least in my amateur view. We can read diversified flavors and stories in photos such as landscape photos that depict affluence and mystery of the nature， portraits that capture distinct characters of individuals， and documentary photos that recorded on－site history. Each time when I look at old pictures， a rich memory opens up， like in a dream， it's that powerful..

The company I work for has been hosting a special photo event every year since 2007. We had the photo exhibition titled "Caring together for Happy World" in 2007， which was the first photo exhibition with photos of patients in Korea to portray the actual patients with in－depth artistic qualities that captures the lives of patients' suffering， their hopes and devotion of caregivers through cameras of a renowned photo artist， Yoo－Young Kim. The project was created in an attempt to illuminate the humanism of patients， their families and the medical people who are struggling with disease and to overcome the pain and suffering.

The noted photo artist Woo－Young Kim is well－known for his remarkable photo documentary making up 'Chomolungma Human Expedition Team' together with the famous alpinist Hong－gil Um where they found dead bodies of Himalayan mountain climbing victims in 2005.

His artistic photos captured real and impressive scenes of 100 patients and caregivers such as patient families and healthcare professionals. The life stories of those in the patient photos were diverse as that of patients recovered from cancer， a wife who takes care of her half－paralyzed husband， a mother who does not lose hope for her son with a difficult－to－treat rare disease， as well as celebrity patients. The photo exhibition tour was held at various organizations， including the Insa Art Center for general public and hospitals for patients and medical professionals， attracting public interest in the photos depicting humanism of patients.

In parallel with this， my company has sponsored a photo contest among medical doctors every year， aimed to help better understand patient－doctor interactions and doctors' devotion in real medical settings. The photos give us an excellent glimpse of the real scenes of people in medical settings and their warm heart by capturing such vivid scenes as 'the moment of birth of the first baby'， 'blood－spattering operating room'， 'days of internship when slept curled up'， and 'the memory of days served at the Antarctic Research Program base clinic'.

We say that a photo reflects the very feeling of the photographer. In other words， taken photos show different 'feel and look' depending on how the photographer interacts with subjects for photography. As a photographer looks at the subject with love through lens to capture good pictures， let's look at the world with affirmative frame. I believe that it can be an important step to bring about happiness and fulfillment in this difficult time.
